As music becomes more diverse in its genres and content, so does the controversy surrounding its influence. There has been several discussions about the effect music is having on youth, with the argument on one hand being that among other things, it has corrupted values and led to violence, homophobia, materialism, poor morals, misogyny and low self-esteem. While contrary to this argument is that Entertainers/ Artistes are merely reflecting in their music, what they see in society or what music lovers like to hear.
Following his study of more than 36, 000 persons in over 6o countries who were rated based on their musical styles andaspects of their personality, Professor North commented that “many of the personality traits recorded across 104 musical styles gave the sense that people selected musical styles that matched their own personality.” For instance, the findings for reggae showed that the more someone likes reggae, the higher he/she scores on self-esteem, assertiveness and creativity.
As supported by the study, music appeals to different persons in different ways because of the variations in personality types; a person will like a particular song or its message because it corresponds with an element of his/her personality. Therefore, music message may further act on or develop an instinct that was already present in one’s personality, not instill the message as a personality trait. Emphasizing its importance, Professor North argued that “the findings show that psychology is a powerful tool that can be used to help understand the inner workings of someone's mind and how personality shapes a person's view of the world in general and music preference in specific."
